Our lovely Graham was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) on the 13th April 2007. He successfully weathered two cycles of chemotherapy and was in remission until Wednsday 30th January 2008. Because of the genetic type of his disease, he is unlikely to be cured by chemotherapy alone, which is evidenced by his recent relapse. The only real chance of a cure is for him to receive a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant otherwise known as a Bone Marrow Transplant. Unfortunately, as Graham is adopted, he doesn't have an HLA-identical sibling to act as a donor for him so the Red Cross here in Australia have been searching the Bone Marrow Registries worldwide to find a match. Graham has a rare tissue type and a match has not been found. He received a Double Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Transplant with Ex-Vivo Expansion of one of the Cords at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance on Wed 6th August. He will be recovering in Seattle till November 2008. |
